Critical Review on Definitions of Sustainable Development - Group No.24 Task 2

Critical review on definitions of sustainable development

The three approved definitions were,

·      *“Sustainable development is defined as development that satisfies the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy theirs“(Brundland, 1987).

·   * “Sustainable development is concerned with the development of a society where the cost of development are not transferred to future generations, or at least an attempt is made to compensate for such costs” (Pearce, 1993).

·       “Sustainable development involves devising a social and economic system, which ensures that these goals are sustained, i.e. that real income rise, that educational standards increase, that the health of the nation improves, that the general quality of life is advanced” ( Pearce, Makandia, Barbier, 1989).

Most of the group member’s views on the definition of sustainable development is as follows,

·   It is developing without giving bad impacts on environment. Usage of sustainable, eco-friendly materials while developing, can help to achieve sustainable development.

·      Monetary improvement that is led without exhaustion of normal assets.

·     Improvement of sustainable goods and products in effective and efficient manner.

·   Efficient and effective development done by committing less harm to the resources for the future usage of those resources.

Above definitions are the summery of the group member’s understanding about sustainable development.
When comparing approved definitions and definitions of group members it is clear that there is huge differences as well as some similarities. Sustainable development is a large tropic and it is difficult to interpret its meaning.

According to approved definitions sustainable development is a development conduct without depletion of natural resources and satisfying present needs and letting future generations to use them as well. And according to approved definitions sustainable development is merely not a physical development, it is a development in many aspects of life like quality of life, education, real income etc.

According to group member’s definitions, sustainable development is a development occur effectively and efficiently without harming natural resources and environment. As well as it is a improvement of sustainable goods effectively and efficiently.

So the similarities with these definitions are as follows,

·       It is not merely a physical development, but a development in many aspects.
·       While developing no/minimum harm on environment and natural resources should be happen.
It is and effective and efficient allocation of resources

The differences between these definitions are,

·        It is a development where the future generation should be equally benefited.
·        It is a development where resources should be reserved to future generation as well.

As a whole, we didn’t understood that it is a process where the benefits of the development should be enjoyed by both present generation and future generation. We didn’t understood that it’s a development where income, education, living standard also a part of it. We only saw it as a physical development where the resources are allocated effectively and efficiently.

Ultimately by comparing all these definitions group member’s developed a new definition for sustainable development. It is as follows,

“Sustainable development is a development occur effectively and efficiently with the use of scares resources and to preserve them for future generation. The benefits of the development must be enjoyed by both the present and future generation. It is merely not a physical development where the development should be happen on real income, education. Standard of living, health etc.”
