Land Conservation Strategies

Land conservation is the process of protecting natural land and returning developed land to its natural state. Due to the fact that some land has only had minor disturbances and other land has been completely destroyed, a variety of techniques are needed to carry out land conservation. Some of the most common techniques include preservation, restoration, remediation, and mitigation.
Nowadays the need of the land conservation has risen up due to the higher rate of land pollution.  When considering about these land conservation strategies, there are few main methods that are widely in use, as follows
      Construction in sloppy lands
      Minimize surface run-off
      Soil conservation
Minimizing surface run-off is one of the important method in land conservation. There are few ways that the minimization of surface run-off would be achieved. Planting trees, side boundaries, earth retaining structures, land coverings are some of them.
Land covering techniques that have being used in University of Moratuwa will be discussed in this article. Land covering techniques are used to control the surface run-off and also to protect the rigidity of the land. Attractive aesthetic appearance is another advantage which can be obtain by the land covering techniques.   Clearly identifiable land covering techniques that have being used in the university premises are as follows.
      Grow grass
      Land tiling
      Asphalt layering

Grow grass is a natural method which is used in land covering. This method is an ecofriendly method and low cost method compared to the artificial methods. Also it adds natural beauty to the premises. Land tiling is another land covering method which gives a better aesthetic appearance. This method  is an artificial land
covering method which is expensive compared to the grow grass method. Asphalt layering can be considered as another artificial land covering method which is durable but highly expensive and harder to construct compared to the other land covering methods.
Finally, it is clear that land covering is an important technique among other land conservation techniques which is an effective method in prevention of surface run-off.
