Innovative Sustainable     Materials
    
         Nowadays sustainability has become a major concept concerning in construction industry. As defined by the United Nations in June 1987, sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs. So that sustainable materials should provide
service to all generations throughout the life cycle of that material.  With the concept of sustainable development, improvements to the traditional materials and innovation of new materials are carried on with the development of technology in order to achieve better quality sustainable materials. These innovations are necessary to the construction industry, because the destruction to the natural environment and resources due to the constructions can be minimized using these innovative sustainable materials.
  
  

 CO2  Absorbing Concrete  

      Concrete is a major building material which is widely used in construction industry mostly because of its strength and durability. When considering environmental impacts of construction, concrete plays a major role as it generates CO2  in manufacturing concrete. But the impact of concrete as a building material is less compared to other materials. Anyway as an innovative sustainable material, COabsorbing concrete has been introduced to the construction
industry. This type of concrete absorbs CO2 throughout its life time through a process called carbonation. And also it helps to minimize the urban heat island effect when used as pavement so exterior cladding. This is done by reducing the energy required to heat and cool the buildings.



Reactive Powder Concrete(RPC)

         Another innovative sustainable material used in construction industry is Reactive Powder Concrete(RPC)
 which is also known as Ultra High Performance Concrete. RPC is a concrete mixture with a maximized density gained through the utilization of a precise gradation.  This concrete is much more durable than standard concrete due to the high density. And also it is less susceptible to penetration by moisture, so that the reinforcement in the concrete remains in their original strength over the course of the material use. This can also withstand the corrosive effect of acids and penetration of radio active particles. The major service of this concrete is the use silica fume in manufacturing RPC, which is by-product of making silicon metal and Ferro-silicon alloy sand is hazardous to the environment and should be disposed in a carefully controlled energy intensive manner.



Oriented Strand Boards (OSB)

         Wood is also another major building material used in construction industry. One major innovative product of wood is Oriented Strand Boards (OSB).

Invention of these boards was done lately, but is well known among the parties involved in the construction industry. The sustainable feature of this material is the use of inapplicable chips which were left after dear-cutting tree trunks. As some toxics were identified to be emitted from OSB, a new type or innovation called “New Generation”OSB panels were  manufactured and introduced to the construction industry with the use of isocyanide resins and are considered to be non-volatile and relatively hazard free.

         Translucent concrete is a   concrete based
building material with light trans-missive properties due to embedded light optical elements.It's made by Optical Fiber.The light transmitting property makes them appear fresh, open & spacious.

Electrified wood
         
       This European designed material incorporates a source of electricity directly into tables & chairs.If two metal layers are pressed between the wood of the furniture, making it possible to pass an electrical current through the whole thing.The 12 volt power is fed to the metal layers via one connector, lamp and other devices can be connected via the other.



carbon fiber

       Carbon fiber is made up of carbon strands that are thinner than human hair.
the strand can be woven together, like cloths and then that can be molded to any shape you might want. it is an extremely strong, light weight material.
it's five times as strong as steel, two time as stiff, yet weighs about two third less.


Self repairing cement

        A new self healing cement is currently being developed which has the ability to repair its own cracks. this cement is mixed with micro capsules that release a glue like epoxy resin that will automatically repair any cracks that form in the sidewalk or roadway. In addition this cement will have the ability to regulate heat.





liquid granite

         The material is  light weight and has the same load bearing capacity of cement, but is made of recycled materials.liquid granite is not only fire resistance beyond 1100 Celsius  it can also withstand high temperatures for longer periods. it has moisture resisting properties.


            These innovative sustainable materials help to save energy, make pollution free, save time, make construction of buildings simpler with more strength and drive to a sustainable development.
